Mountain Top University Advocates Gender Equality and Inclusive Leadership During 2026 Gender Week Celebration
As part of its commitment to promoting equity, inclusiveness, and sustainable development, the Centre for Gender Studies, Mountain Top University, organised a thought-provoking webinar during its 2026 Gender Week celebration. The event, which took place on 13 May 2026, was held under the leadership of the Director of the Centre, Dr Nelly A. Ndukwe, and brought together students, staff, and other stakeholders to discuss the critical role of gender balance in national development.
The webinar, themed "Anchoring Transformative Leadership for Sustainable Development: The Gender Role and Socio-Cultural Influence," provided a platform for meaningful discourse on the importance of gender inclusivity, equal opportunities, and the transformative impact of balanced leadership in contemporary society.
Delivering the keynote address was the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, who was represented by his Special Assistant, Mr Usman Hassan.
In his presentation, the guest speaker challenged participants, particularly students of Mountain Top University, to embrace the values of gender equality, inclusiveness, and mutual respect. He emphasised the need for individuals to recognise and appreciate the unique strengths, talents, and contributions of both men and women in society.
According to him, sustainable development can only be achieved when every member of society is given equal opportunities to develop their potential and contribute meaningfully to collective progress. He noted that gender equality is not merely a social ideal but a developmental necessity that fosters innovation, productivity, and national growth.
The speaker further stressed that societies thrive when barriers that limit participation based on gender are removed. He observed that empowering both men and women through education, leadership opportunities, and capacity development initiatives creates a more equitable and prosperous society.
Highlighting the role of young people in shaping a more inclusive future, Mr Hassan encouraged students to challenge stereotypes and reject discriminatory attitudes that hinder personal and societal advancement. He urged participants to cultivate an environment where merit, competence, and character are valued above gender considerations.
During the interactive question-and-answer session, the guest speaker addressed several issues relating to gender perceptions, leadership, and personal development. He particularly emphasised the importance of overcoming limiting mindsets and self-imposed barriers that often prevent individuals from realising their full potential.
He encouraged participants, especially women and young people, not to allow societal expectations or gender stereotypes to define their capabilities. Rather, he urged them to approach every responsibility with confidence, determination, resilience, and a strong commitment to excellence.
According to him, success is largely driven by competence, consistency, and hard work rather than gender. He therefore challenged participants to pursue their aspirations courageously, embrace opportunities for growth, and remain steadfast in their pursuit of personal and professional excellence.
In his concluding remarks, Mr Hassan called on participants to prioritise humanity above gender classifications. He stressed the importance of treating every individual with dignity, fairness, and respect, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, or social background.
The event reaffirmed Mountain Top University's dedication to fostering an inclusive academic environment where diversity is celebrated, equal opportunities are encouraged, and every individual is empowered to contribute meaningfully to societal progress. Through initiatives such as the Gender Week celebration, the University continues to advance conversations that inspire positive social change and prepare students to become responsible leaders in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.
