As part of its unwavering commitment to promoting academic excellence, research integrity, and quality assurance, Mountain Top University trained members of its academic community on the ethical principles and professional standards that govern research writing and scholarly publications.
The training, which took place on Thursday, 18 June 2026, at the School of Postgraduate Studies Conference Hall, brought together lecturers, researchers, and postgraduate students for an intensive engagement on the importance of ethical conduct in research and publication.
The Foundations of Research Integrity
The workshop featured Professor Mba Odim, a prolific Professor of Computer Science, who delivered a comprehensive lecture on the principles, responsibilities, and best practices required to sustain integrity in academic research. His presentation focused on the foundations of research ethics, common forms of research misconduct, responsible research practices, and the institutional mechanisms necessary for maintaining credible and globally accepted scholarly standards.
Addressing participants, Professor Odim emphasised that honesty, accountability, transparency, fairness, and respect remain the cardinal pillars upon which every meaningful and credible research endeavour must be built. He noted that the quality and acceptance of research outputs largely depend on the ethical standards demonstrated throughout the research process.
According to him, the growing demand for evidence-based knowledge and innovation makes it imperative for researchers to uphold the highest standards of integrity while conducting and disseminating research findings. He warned that unethical practices such as fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism continue to pose serious threats to the credibility of academic institutions and the global research ecosystem.
“Researchers must remain committed to truth and objectivity at all stages of their work. The pursuit of knowledge must never be compromised by actions capable of undermining the credibility of research outcomes,” he stated.
Addressing Misconduct and Emerging Technologies
Professor Odim further cautioned participants against engaging in questionable research practices, including selective reporting of results, p-hacking, salami slicing, and gift authorship, describing them as subtle but dangerous forms of academic misconduct capable of distorting scientific evidence and eroding public confidence in scholarly work.
The resource person also highlighted the importance of proper data collection, documentation, storage, analysis, and management. He stressed the need for researchers to safeguard the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in research while ensuring strict compliance with ethical guidelines in the use of emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence.
Institutional Responsibilities
Speaking on institutional responsibilities, Professor Odim urged the university management to establish clear and comprehensive research policies, provide continuous ethics training for researchers and supervisors, implement secure reporting channels for ethical violations, and maintain transparent procedures for investigating allegations of misconduct.
He maintained that institutions must create an environment that encourages ethical scholarship and responsible research practices, noting that the collective efforts of researchers and administrators are essential for sustaining academic credibility and excellence.
Conclusion
The webinar concluded with a call on participants to champion ethical research practices in their respective fields and contribute to the advancement of knowledge through integrity-driven scholarship.
The event reinforced the University’s reputation as a centre of excellence dedicated to producing academically sound, morally upright, and globally competitive graduates equipped to address contemporary challenges through responsible research and innovation.
