The Department of Biological Sciences is one of the foundational Departments at Mountain Top University. Domiciled in the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS), this Department is home to three (3) different programmes: Biology, Biotechnology, and Microbiology.
Philosophy of the Department
The Programmes in the Department of Biological Sciences empowers students with unique skill and techniques in the various specializations which are important in solving relevant challenges locally and globally. Students are exposed to both pure and applied courses to satisfy the manpower needs within the community. It combines theoretical principles with a pragmatic approach to proffering solutions not only to undertake postgraduate work but also motivating the students to become excellent employees or entrepreneurs.
Objectives of the Department
To provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of biological knowledge and practical skills
To develop in students the ability to apply knowledge and transferable skills to solving theoretical and practical problems in biological sciences
To provide students with a knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas of biological sciences or multi-disciplinary areas involving biological sciences
To provide thorough training and orientation, an appreciation of the rewards of inter-and multi-disciplinary approaches to the solution of complex life problems.
To instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for biological sciences and an appreciation of the importance of these fields of natural science in industrial, economic, environmental, technological and social development
The background and expertise provided by this multidisciplinary degree provide graduates with qualifications and flexibility for employment in diverse areas. Career opportunities exist in medical, agricultural, pharmaceutical, educational, environmental, and food/beverage industries. Other areas of career options are research, entrepreneurship, science policy formulation law and intellectual property, consulting, forensic science, marketing, and sales, among many others.
