Mission – Philosophy of the Department
The mission of the Department of Economics is to produce graduates of Economics that are comparable to those of the highest ranking universities in the world, graduates that are employable in first class companies, and those that are potentially first class entrepreneurs and employers of labour.
The major objective of the degree programme in Economics Department, Mountain Top University are:
To equip students with adequate academic knowledge in all branches of Economics field of endeavor and enable them to compare well with their counterparts in the leading Nigerian universities and in those of the developed countries.
To provide the students with analytical skills and techniques for analyzing and solving the Nigerian economic and business problems.
To activate and stimulate the latent entrepreneurial talents in the students and to equip them with the necessary analytical tools and skills that will transform them to successful entrepreneurs, capable of setting up their own businesses.
To infuse in them moral uprightness, self-respect and patriotism. The Departmental programme is structured to inculcate dedication to duty, consideration of others and self-reliance in students.
To train all our students using the most tested and simplest methodology that will empower them to excel in all various life endeavors.
The graduates of Economics have many avenues for employment. They can get employed in the Civil Service, Blue Ship Companies, Multinational Companies, Downstream and Upstream sectors, or in any other formal private sectors Business Organizations; there are also avenues for graduates of Economics in the Banking and Finance Industry, Business Consultancy, Research and Teaching in Tertiary Institutions to mention but few of them. But more importantly, many of them are expected to set up their business outfits; they are trained to identify viable business opportunities and to operate and to manage them independently as employer of labour.
General
For admission into any of the first degree programmes of University, a candidate shall be required to possess the following minimum qualifications:
Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects at not more than two (2) sittings. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Candidates seeking admission by Direct Entry into 200 level must have at least five (5) O’ Level credits, with a minimum of two (2) relevant subjects at Advanced level or approved equivalents.
In addition to O’ level requirement, candidate seeking admission to any of our PG programmes must have at least possess B.Sc., M.Sc. for Post Graduate Diploma, Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy degrees respectively.
Admission requirement: four-year degree programme in Economics
The Four Year Degree Programme in Economics:
Candidates must have obtained credit passes in five subjects at a sitting or six subjects at not more than two sittings at ‘O’ Level/Senior Secondary Certificate (WAEC, NECO etc.) Examinations. The credits must include English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects in Arts or Social Sciences.
Candidate must take at the UTME, English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other Arts of Social Sciences Subjects.
Candidates must succeed in Screening Test.
Admission requirement: three-year degree programme in Economics
To be considered for admission into the 3-year degree programme, candidates must have passed, at credit level, five subjects including English Language, Economics and Mathematics at the Senior Secondary School Certificates/GCE Ordinary Level or its equivalent, as well as Economics and at least one of Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Accounting, Business Management, History or Government at the G.C.E, Advanced level.
(Note: Commerce is not one of the subjects accepted in the Department of Economics)
Inter-university transfer-to be provided by the university.
Students transferring to Economics Department from Economics Departments of any recognized and accredited University will be expected to be on a CGPA of not less than 3.0 on 5-point scale. Such students can only transfer to year III (300 Level).
Admission requirement – PGD programme
To qualify for admission to the PDG programme, a candidate must have any of the following:
Hold a first degree in other related fields with minimum of Third Class grade.
Hold a first degree in other non-related disciplines with a minimum of 2 years work experience.
Candidates may be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process before admission.
Candidates are also expected to satisfy all other requirements of the School of Postgraduates Studies.
Admission – M.Sc. programme
Candidates seeking entry to the M.Sc. programme in Economics should hold a Bachelor’s Degree (at least Second Class Lower Division). Candidates must satisfy the following specific requirements.
Eligible candidates are graduates of Economics or related courses such as Finance, Statistics and Mathematics.
Candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics and Economics at the O’ level.
Have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from an approved university whose Economic Programme is accredited by NUC.
Have a minimum of a Second Class Lower Degree in the discipline with CGPA of not lower than 2.5 on a 5.0 scale.
Candidates will however be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process through an entrance examination/interview.
The candidate must have completed the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme or have been exempted as the case may be.
Admission requirements – Ph. D. programme
All candidates must:
Possess the university minimum requirement for a B. Sc. Degree in Economics
Have obtained a Bachelor’s degree from an approved university whose Economic Programme is accredited by NUC.
Have a minimum of a Second Class Lower degree in the discipline with CGPA of not lower than 2.5 on a 5.0 point scale.
Hold a Master’s degree in Economics with a CGPA of at least 4.0 on a 5.0 point scale.
Durations of the Programme
The minimum duration of the B. Sc. Economics is 4 years for UTME candidates and 3 years for direct entry candidates. The minimum duration for PGD is two semesters, M. Sc. is three semesters while P.hD. is six semesters.
