Department of Geosciences

About Our Department

When thinking about the knowledge of the origin of our planet, the Earth, its history, and the processes of evolution it has undergone in its over 5 billion years of history, Geosciences comes to mind. At the Department of Geosciences at Mountain Top University, we train students to become specialists in the fields of Geology and Geophysics. The training is aimed at equipping students with scientific knowledge needed to explore and develop energy, mineral, and water resources, conserve the earth’s depleting resources, and as well address environmental issues and engineering problems. We are fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Objectives of the Department of Geosciences

  • Impact basic and fundamental knowledge in the areas of Geology and Geophysics.
  • Provide the necessary training and exposure in the areas of Geology and Geophysics that is at the forefront of development such as hydrocarbon and groundwater exploration, environmental pollution detection and remediation, dam site, roads, and other civil engineering construction site investigations.
  • Develop the necessary workforce needed for industrial, technological, research, and academic purposes in all aspects of Geology and Geophysics.
  • Provide effective teaching, research, and practical oriented/fieldwork programmes that are required in all the fields of Geology and Geophysics.
  • Offer opportunities for the full development of Geosciences to meet the ever-growing challenges in the industry, private sector, and government services that are required for the overall growth and development of the nation and mankind.

Career opportunities in the field of Geosciences

The programme is designed to meet advanced training in all aspects of Geology and Geophysics for future challenges. Graduates will be resourceful in the following careers:

  • Work as a Geoscientist in the Oil sector for Oil exploration and production with adequate knowledge in Seismic Interpretation, Well log, and Petrophysical interpretation from our resourced workstation.
  • Work in the Solid Mineral sector, by exploring solid minerals needed for national development.
  • Work in the engineering and construction sector as an engineering geologist/geophysicist.
  • Work in environmental companies/agencies as an environmental geologist/geophysicist needed in mapping spillage from oil, leachates from dumpsites, toxins from industries, and other Environmental Impact and Assessment (EIA) applications of Geosciences.
  • Work as a hydrologist in Water Resources Company/Government Agencies by delineating suitable depth for drilling boreholes, studying water resources evaluation, abstraction, and migration/flow pattern.
  • Researcher in reputable institutions of higher learning.
