About Our Department


Welcome to the Department of Accounting and Finance (DAF), Mountain Top University (MTU). DAF is among the first departments established in 2015 in the College of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences (CHMS) of the University (MTU). At the beginning, the Department operated two-degree programmes which include B.Sc. Accounting, and B.Sc. Banking and Finance. The two courses were accredited by the NUC in 2018. In 2020, the Banking and Finance programme was changed to B.Sc. Finance to broaden the career opportunities for the students in line with the global financial developments. In the same year 2020, the number of programmes increased to THREE with the addition of B.Sc. Securities and Investment. We have the state-of-the-art Accounting Laboratory technology loaded with the latest accounting packages like QuickBooks, Sage, Power Bi, E-View, and other statistical tools to make our students globally competitive.


Objectives of the Department of Accounting & Finance


  • Accounting Programme: The major objectives of a Bachelor’s degree programme in Accounting are to:
    1. Graduate high-level accounting personnel with tremendous contributions to the development of accounting practice through research and publications;
    2. Provide basic knowledge and skills needed for the understanding and analysis of problems relating to accounting in the management of industrial, commercial, public, and other humanitarian organizations.
    3. Equip students with knowledge and skills of decision making, especially, the analytical skills needed for recognizing, defining, and solving problems.
    4. Develop in students, leadership, and interpersonal relations skills in accounting/management.
    5. Provide training aimed at improving and upgrading the existing and potential manpower needed for national development.
  • Finance Programme: The objectives of the Finance programme are derived from the overall aims and objectives of establishing the College of Management and Social Sciences at Mountain Top University and are basically to:
    1. Prepare students for the acquisition of sound knowledge of the scope and content of finance as a discipline.
    2. Enable students to be creative in tackling financial problems.
    3. Inculcate in student professional attitudes, ethics and skills in finance through teaching, interaction with practitioners and the professional institutes.
    4. Provide comprehensive exposure to students in all areas of the financial system and the national economy in order to handle the challenges of the changing environment;
    5. Ensure that students can successfully complete and pass examinations required to become professionals in the various areas of financial studies upon graduation.
  • Securities & Investment Programme: The major objectives of a Bachelor’s degree programme in Securities and Investment are to:
    1. To produce high level Securities and Investment manpower that will contribute to the development of Securities and Investment practice through research and publication.
    2. Provide and equip students with basic knowledge and skills needed for the understanding, analysis and solving of problems relating to Securities and Investment portfolio of all economic units globally, intercontinentally, continentally, nationally, corporately and to individual investors.
    3. Develop students in leadership and interpersonal relations skills in Securities and Investment management for national development.

Admission requirements to the Department of Accounting & Finance


General

  1. For admission into any of the first-degree programs of the University, a candidate shall be required to possess the following minimum qualifications: Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects at not more than two (2) sittings. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
  2. Candidates seeking admission by Direct Entry into 200 levels must have at least five (5) O’ level credits, with a minimum of two (2) relevant subjects at an advanced level or approved equivalents.

UTME Candidates (4-Year Degree Programme)

To qualify for entry into the 4-year programme for the award of a B.Sc. Degree in Accounting, Finance, and Securities & Investment, a candidate must fulfill the following:

  1. Possess Five O’ level credit passes at not more than two sittings including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects from the following: Geography, Biology, Commerce, Government, Account and Book-keeping at not more than two sittings.
  2. Sit and earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Direct Entry Candidates (3-Year Degree Programme)

To qualify for entry into the 3-year programme for the award of a B.Sc. Degree in Accounting, Finance, and Securities & Investment, a candidate must fulfill the following:

  1. Possess Five O’ level credit passes at not more than two sittings including English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any other two subjects from the following: Geography, Biology, Commerce, Government, Account, and Book-keeping at not more than two sittings.
  2. Possess three A’ Level passes in the relevant commercial courses acceptable to the University.
  3. Possess Ordinary National Diploma Lower Credit in relevant courses including Accounting, Finance, Insurance, Banking, and other Financial Studies courses. iv. Possess National Certificate of Education, Merit in relevant courses including Accounting, Finance, Insurance, Banking, and other Financial Studies courses.

Professional Bodies and Examinations

To qualify for entry into the 3-year programme for the award of a B.Sc. Degree in Accounting, Finance, and Securities and Investment, a candidate must fulfill the following: i. Possess Five O’ level credit passes at not more than two sittings including English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any other two subjects. ii. Possess CSA, ICAN, ACCA (London), and CIMN, ACMA, ANAN, CIBN, CITN, ACS, ACSI, and any other relevant professional qualification.
